Day 1 Urumqi
We will meet you at Urumqi airport and gather for a trip briefing over dinner. If it were not for its name and the distinct facial features of local residents, Urumqi, with its wide streets and modern office buildings would be quite a typical Chinese city. From here we will make a transition into a 1,000-year-old Muslim culture that lies further west along the Silk Road.
Day 2 Urumqi to Kashgar
We will take an early morning flight to Kashgar, a fabled Muslim city at the foot of the Pamir Mountains. Kashgar is a world removed from China. Once the key trading post bridging East and West, this vibrant town is largely inhabited by the Turkic-descended Uygurs. The Islamic architecture in the center of Kashgar remained unchanged for many centuries. We will spend the afternoon at the Id Kah Mosque, where the Friday prayer will be attended by pilgrims from all over Xinjiang.
Day 3 Kashgar to Lake Karakol
The drive to Lake Karakol takes 5-6 hours through breathtaking scenery of high mountain pastures and snow-capped peaks. On the way, we will stop at a village by the Abakh Hoja Tomb for lunch. The sight and sounds of local vendors selling juicy fruits by the road side and small donkey carts driven by singing cart masters add vibrancy to this village. At the base of Muztagh Ata (7,545 m/24,754 ft), sits Lake Karakol (3,770 m/12,369 ft), a majestic blue glacial lake that is fed by the mammoth, century-old glaciers above it. We will spend the night in a yurt (a tent made from animal hide) by the lake.
Day 4 Lake Karakol to Kangxiwa
Today's trek will take us through vast grasslands to a Tajik village on the slope of Mt. Kongur, where clay houses are decorated with brightly woven wool carpets with traditional designs. About 6 hours after the start of the trek, we will reach Kangxiwa (4,050 m/13,287 ft), where we will camp for the evening and enjoy a hearty meal to rejuvenate ourselves for the next day's journey.
Day 5 Kangxiwa to Subashi
We will continue walking along the grasslands, passing nomads milking or herding yaks. The trek to Subashi (3,780 m/12,402 ft) will take between 6 to 7 hours.
Day 6 Subashi to Muztagh Ata Base Camp
Here we will cross rivers on camel. As we move across the mountain face, we will appreciate new views of Muztagh Ata with Lake Karakol and glacial mountains in the distance. After 4-5 hours of walking, we will finally arrive at the Base Camp (4,500 m/14,764 ft).
Day 7 Base Camp to Camp 1 to Base Camp
Today's trek will take you up to the snow borders at Camp 1 (5,300 m/17,388 ft) past the entrance of the Janbulak glacier, a 3-5 hour trek from the Base Camp. We will return to the Base Camp in the afternoon.
Day 8 Base Camp to Subashi
Today we will make our 3-hour descent to Subashi.
Day 9 Subashi to Kashgar
Drive back to Kashgar
Day 10 Kashgar
We will have the day to rest and recover from our trek. In the afternoon, we can visit the local bazaar and/or cycle to the Irislahan Mosque.
Day 11 Kashgar
Today we will spend the morning visiting the bustling market, where many people from around Kashgar flock to bargain and trade everything from sheep, donkeys, and horses to animal hide and wares. We will take the evening flight back to Urumqi.
Day 12 Urumchi Exit
